We work on an appointment based schedule at LVC. We do this so that our clients (and indeed our patients) don't need to wait unnecessarily long. Also we know who is coming at that time. That means that the vet can re-evaluate any relevant history on the computer files, and the nurses can prepare treatments or tests that may be expected during the consultation.
We see booked consults 9-11am and 4-6pm Mondays to Fridays and on Saturday mornings. Emergency cases are seen at any time.
Appointments can be made by phone, email or popping into the clinic.
Lagos Vet Clinic are stockists of ‘Royal Canin' pet foods and ‘Specific' pet foods exclusively. This is because we value the nutrition for your pet above all else.
‘Royal Canin' is the best quality pet food available, ‘Specific' pet food is the best budget food we have found. We don't sell cheap pet food because it is not good for your dog or cat's health.
Unfortunately many people think that buying dog food from LIDL or Pingo Doce is enough to keep their dog healthy. It will keep them alive, yes, but cheap pet foods do not contain the right ingredients to keep them healthy for a long life. Top quality food is an investement in your dog or cats future.
Dental chews are another great example. Many dogs come to consults with plaque and tartar across their teeth, whilst their owners have been giving supermarket dental chews every week. Much effort and money is wasted by people on inferior nutritional and dental products for their pet.
Click on our ‘Nutrition' link to read more, or just call in to us and speak to our staff.
Here is a photo of Norm, our poster-boy dog. He will be 13 this year and runs all day long. He has been fed Royal Canin throughout his life and the proof is in the pudding:
A healthy, active and shining senior citizen (not that he knows that)!
Lagos Vet Clinic has several diagnostic units to allow a rapid assessment needed for internal medicine. We have the equipment needed to assess skin samples, lump aspirates urine samples and blood smears.
We have in house tests for infectious diseases such as parvo and feline aids and have incubators to do in-house bacteriology and sensitivity testing for chronic infections.
We also have blood machines which tell us about the status of major internal organs and electrolytes in the blood. This is essential for rapid diagnosis of sick animals and also for carrying out pre-anaesthetic blood tests to check the safety of an anaesthetic to be carried out on the same day.
The dedicated surgical suite is equipped to carry out all soft tissue surgeries such as thoracic and abdominal operations including sterlisations, as well as plastic surgery and skin grafts.
The surgery has a range of instruments and machines to carry out orthopaedic procedures like bone and ligament repairs.
Spinal surgery is also undertaken at Lagos Vet Clinic using very specialised spinal surgery instrumentation. We work in conjunction with a CT scan clinic to localise lesions prior to surgery.
We use only the safest anaesthetic drugs and protocols. All anaesthetics are
monitored and recorded throughout. We recommend I/V fluid support for our anaesthetics and are equipped with fluid pumps to ensure accurate fluid (and drug) delivery. For an overview of our procedures, please click here SURGERY PROTOCOL .
All vaccinations for dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and horses are available at LVC. All animals are examined thoroughly prior to vaccinating to ensure the animal is fit for the injection and to check for any (unnoticed) diseases.
Microchipping your pet gives you more chance of finding it should it run (or be chased) away. Cats and dogs are sitting waiting for their owners in many holding facilities in Portugal. If they were microchipped , they could be home the same day. We get a tremendous amount of joy (and relief) when we are brought a stray and we find that it has a microchip.
A microchip costs just 25€ which includes life-long registration with a national database in Lisbon.
A chip is the size of a grain of rice and is simply injected under the skin between the shoulder blades. If you move countries, chips are easily registered in your new country of residence. And you will need one if you intend on taking your pet across borders.
A chip is also a legal requirement of dog ownership in Portugal (along with an annual rabies vaccination).
Animal Health Screening is a simple and effective way of monitoring your older pet's health. Early detection of pet disease means early intervention and in many cases this will mean successful treatment and prevention of medical problems.
Pre-emptive pet care helps to ensure your pet will be healthy and active for as long as possible. We think it is a wonderful way of ensuring that your companion and family member does not leave you prematurely.
We don't want you to find yourself in a situation that could have been prevented just by taking a simple test.
Pets age around 7 times faster, meaning that we consider a 7 year old dog as a 50 year old person. As we know it is unusual to not get regular checks on many indices at this age eg cholesterol, blood pressure, PSA, thyroid checks.
Pets over 7 years of age have a greater chance of harbouring underlying disease in the ageing process.
As we all know pets cannot tell us how they are feeling and additionally disease
processes can start well before symptoms arise. This may mean your pet is unwell without you even knowing it.
Health screening is the key to early detection of disease in these animals and means we can take steps to manage and even reverse the problem before irreparable damage is done.
For example, did you know that over 75% of kidney function is lost before there are any external signs of renal failure? We cannot reverse damage to kidney cells as they do not regenerate, however the good news is that if we identify the problem early we can save many of those cells that would otherwise have been lost. As the old adage tells us, prevention is better than cure.
These checks can be done on an annual basis when your pet comes for it's yearly vaccination. It is simple, fast and important.
GERIATRIC CLUB The Lagos Vet Clinic also has two geriatric programs. The first includes blood work, urinalysis, blood pressure analysis and regular health checks; whilst the second adds to these: abdominal ultrasonography and radiology to look for undetected diseases within the body. Many dogs have been saved by detecting splenic masses that were ready to rupture and operated on before disaster struck.
Remember early detection and intervention is the key to successful treatment. Anything we can do to help prolong a healthy happy life of our best friend is time well spent.
Dental disease is a very overlooked problem in animal health. Anyone who has suffered through it knows that it is painful, but left unchecked, it will cause very serious problems to whole body health and can cause organ (including heart) failure.
We have a separate area where we undertake dental surgery. Patients are placed under the same anaesthetic protocols and given pre and post operative pain killers and antibiotics. We have Xray facilities to find if there is decay in the roots of teeth that may not otherwise be apparent.
We can give you an appraisal of your dog or cats mouth for free, if you are unsure if its just bad breath or if your pet has real oral disease.
We use a range of equipment needed for extractions and scaling and polishing of teeth. Prevention of recurrence is discussed during consults with owners.
A new service in veterinary practice that has been long overdue. Just like when a person puts their back out, drugs will help dull the pain, but some form of intervention is needed to relieve the spasm in the muscles and ligaments and get the body moving normally again.
Acupuncture combined with deep tissue massage accomplishes this and improves quality of life in patients suffering back and joint pain. It can be used in conjunction with medications or on its own.
It has also proven to be an integral part in getting our orthopaedic surgery patients back to normality faster. This is better for the owner and pet, but it also speeds real-time healing,
Physiotherapy is another arm of rehabilitation either from injury or from surgery. LVC has various physiotherapy protocols for differing problems. We also have specialised animal physio equipment for the patients to use in order to strengthen muscles and tone ligaments.
LCV now has Jenny Quigley providing a professional service at Lagos Groomers operating downstairs from the clinic. The separate parlour is fully equipped with all latest grooming equipment where dogs of all sizes can have their individual needs tended to. Your pet can receive anything from a full groom, clipped and scissored to breed standard to a just a brush, wash and blow dry.
The warmer conditions in the Algarve give rise to many skin problems. Breeds from other countries may be too furry for our hot climes. Dermatitis problems such as Hot Spots need veterinary attention and part of the treatment protocol is to clip away the fur from that area, making it less inviting for partying bacteria.
You can help to stop these infections by keeping your dog's coat and skin healthy. Jenny can give you advice about the most appropriate way to maintain your dog's coat through the hot summer months.
Proper grooming through the parlour will maintain coat (and therefore skin) health. This decreases dermatitis cases in dogs with problem skin. Shampooing with anti-allergy treatments helps decrease the need for steroids in allergic dogs as well.
Dermatitis cases can be found during a groom. Clinic staff are on hand to inspect any suspicious lesions seen in the parlour and cases can be discussed with the owner. If an owner wishes, a skin case can be treated through the clinic on the same day.
In the parlour, animals are groomed in a friendly and stress-free environment. Some owners know that their pet will not stand for being groomed and will become stressed and aggressive. When owners request that their cat or dog receive a little medicated calming before a bath or clip, Veterinary administered sedations can be given and monitored by trained staff. This means it is a safe and fast procedure. This can be a blessing for stressed pets (and their owners!).
Lagos Vet Clinic has two radiology machines. One main one for looking into problems in the chest and abdomen as well as bone problems such as hips and spinal Xrays , including myelograms.
The other, portable unit, is used for intra-operative Xrays when we do orthopaedic repair surgeries. This is to ensure that metal implants are sitting correctly before finishing the operation.
This portable unit is also taken on horse calls for Xraying bone problems in the field.
We also have a colour Doppler wave Ultrasound machine. This not only allows imaging of organ structure within the body but is used to ensure accurate biopsy sampling of internal organs. And of course to confirm pregnancies.
This machine also gets taken into the field to scan horses tendons when damaged.
The clinic has a (rigid) endoscope which can be used for colonoscopy, tracheoscopy and endoscopy. This allows visual assessment inside these structures and for visually guided biopsy of diseased tissues for analysis.
Lars Rahmquist (BVSc) has years of experience in equine practices in Australia and the U.K. The practice 4WD is stocked with the equipment needed to treat a range of equine problems from lameness to colic.
Routine surgeries such as castrations, lacerations and feet surgery are also carried out. We also offer reproduction work and tendon scanning on lame horses.
All animals staying in the clinic are regularly checked and treated as appropriate. We have two kennel rooms as well as a separate isolation room for infectious animals such as cats with cat flu and dogs with parvo.
We have ample enclosed outdoor facilities and our canine patients are exercised safely throughout the day, including weekends.
We understand that owners who have their pets in the clinic for surgery or hospitalise for an illness are often concerned. The Lagos Vet Clinic maintains regular contact with owners through phone calls, texts and emails including photos to follow their progress.
We also have boarding facilities for cats at the hospital. You can phone or email reception to check for availability if you need to head overseas for a period.
We prefer to see our small animal patients in the clinic, as all of the drugs and diagnostic equipment is there. As well as the assistance of extra staff. However we understand that in some circumstances the vet needs to go to people's houses to see their animals. This can be arranged for a time during the day by phoning our reception.
Animal patients do develop cancers, just like people. And treatment of cancers has come a long way in veterinary medicine.
Unlike people, animals do not understand that ‘chemo' is making them feel ill in order to try and save their lives. Therefore we use much smaller doses of these drugs. The aim of veterinary oncology is to extend a good quality of life, whilst not having the ill side-effects of these medications.
Know also that there are certain cancers such a skin tumors (amongst others) that can be cured with the right understanding and the right approach from the start. The vets at LVC understand oncology and correspond with oncologists in Portugal, the UK and Australia and America.
We can discuss these options with you should this unfortunate event arise.
As sad as it is, this is a reality for many animals. Our staff aim for compassion and care at these sad times. Owners can stay with the animal if they wish to, and the one injection provides a very smooth and calm passing.
We also work with a company who provide an individual cremation service for people who wish for their pet's ashes to be returned.
